Notable Structures Made Of Travertine!

Willis Tower

Willis tower can be considered as a great success of modern architecture. It was built in 1973 and stayed as world’s tallest tower for about 25 years. Travertine tiles are used in the lobby walls of the willis tower. The tower is second tallest building in America at present.

Burghausen Castle

Burghausen Castle is situated in Burghausen, Upper Bavaria. The castle is longest castle complex in the world and an epitome of ancient architecture which has gone a number of improvements over centuries since its inception. Travertine is the main material used for its building and construction.  Travertine pavers and other structures can be notably identified in this beautiful castle.

Toronto Dominion Center

Toronto Dominion Center is the innovation of architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe who used travertine floorings, outdoor travertine tile and other travertine material in many of his major works. TD Center is a cluster of buildings in Toronto, Ontario comprising of six towers. The building is the global headquarters of Toronto Dominion Bank . Travertine is used in the main lobbies and an underground shopping mall along with black aluminium.

Colosseum

What better an example could be than this one to acknowledge the popularity and wide usage of travertine. It is one of the greatest tourist attractions of Rome, Italy. An epitome of grandeur of ancient roman architecture, Colosseum is built entirely of travertine, tuff and brick faced concrete. It was constructed under Vespasian rule in around 70-72 AD It is the largest amphitheatre ever built.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris

Commonly known as Sacre-Coeur is a Roman catholic church situated in Paris, France. It is a popular landmark that was completed in 1914 and took 39 years for its completion. The architecture shows features of Roman-Byzantine features and totally built of travertine stone quarried in France.

Shell Haus

Shell Haus is a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by Emil Fahrenkamp. It was built in 1930-31. Travertine rock is used for the building facade.
